Tell me a bit about why you wanted to volunteer for Anthony Nolan.

I think Anthony Nolan’s work to save the lives of people with blood cancer and blood disorders is amazing; from searching for a match to supporting patients throughout their transplant journey.

I found myself with some free time and wanted to do something worthwhile. Anthony Nolan offered me an opportunity to get involved and I jumped at the chance.

What does the role involve?

My role is to support the Volunteer Engagement Manager and the Patient Experience team, at Anthony Nolan’s head office in Hampstead.

The Patient Experience team produces a number of vital information resources for patients and their families; from leaflets explaining how we search for and match people with their donor, to handbooks about long-term recovery. The team receives orders through the website as well sending out bulk mail-outs to hospitals.

I get involved with this whole process, including posting out information and organising our stock. I also support the Volunteer Engagement Manager with inputting new volunteers on our database and scanning volunteer paperwork.

How much of your time do you devote to volunteering?

I volunteer for two days a week; about 10 hours altogether.

How do you benefit from volunteering?

I have gained new skills in administration, such as using databases.  My experience of volunteering has also made me realise that I would like to work for a charity in the future. It’s such a great feeling to know that I have contributed to society and helped make a difference.

What do your friends and family think about your volunteering role?

My family are happy that I am spending me time with such a great organisation.
